The Piano Concerto No. 2 is one of the most important compositions by Camille Saint-Saëns, who composed the work in only 17 days. It demands extreme virtuosity from the pianist. Saint-Saëns himself played only faiblement at the premiere in Paris, as he had probably not practised his complex three-movement work enough. However, the audience liked the Scherzo right away and the concerto's triumphant progress could not be slowed down by the only moderately successful premiere - especially after further performances in Leipzig and Paris. It became one of the most frequently performed piano concertos - even today, 150 years after its premiere. With over 1,200 titles from orchestral and choral literature, chamber music and music theatre, Edition Eulenburg is the largest score series in the world. It covers a large part of music history from the baroque to classical modernism and looks back on a long tradition.
